| Yes, There is a Santa

"In 1897, a young girl named Virginia wrote
a letter to the New York Sun asking if Santa
Claus really did exist. Some of her friends, she stated,
no longer believed in him. The reply was an editorial by Frank
Church entitled, "Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa
Claus." It contained the following message: "Not believe
in Santa
Claus ! You might as well not believe in fairies . . . Nobody
sees Santa
Claus, but that is no sign there is no Santa
Claus. The most real things in the world are those which
neither children nor men can see. No Santa
Claus! Thank God, he lives and he lives forever." Jack Maguire
There is a legacy in the unseen that
brings hope.
The legend of Santa
Claus begins with a real person who lived in the 4th century
in the village of Patra in what is now known as Turkey. St.
Nicholas came from a wealthy
Christian home, and when his parents died when he was young
he followed the biblical precept to sell what you own and give
to the poor.
One story told about St.
Nicholas is about his concern for a poor man that had three
daughters. This man could not provide a dowry for his daughters,
which at that time destined them to slavery. It is said that
three bags of gold mysteriously appeared in their stockings
or shoes that were left in front of the fireplace to dry. After
this many children left their stockings in front of the fireplace
in hopes of finding gold coins in them, too. Thus an unseen
event brings hope that a child's future can be bright.
When St.
Nicholas was young, he decided to take a pilgrimage to the
Holy Land. While returning home by sea, his ship was threatened
by a violent storm. It is said that when St.
Nicholas prayed the storm ceased, to the amazement of the
sailors. After this many sailors claimed St.
Nicholas as their patron, building chapels named after him
in seaports in Italy, France, Greece and even in Russia after
Vladimir I brought stories of St.
Nicholas' devotion back home with him. From a simple act
of faith in the Unseen begins a legacy of hope for protection
and safety.
It was the sailors that brought St.
Nicholas to our part of the world. Vikings built a cathedral
in Greenland. Columbus built a port in Haiti named after the
saint. Spaniards named a town in Florida St.
Nicholas Ferry - now known as Jacksonville. During the American
Revolution patriots founded the Sons of St.
Nicholas to rival the British St. George Societies. In a
New World, belief in a saint long departed brings hope for a
bright and secure future.
In 1809 Washington Irving, a member of
the Sons of St.
Nicholas, published Knickerbocker's History of New York
where the
saint is characterized as a Dutch burgher who climbed down
chimneys to bring gifts.
In 1823 The Night Before Christmas
was written, introducing St.
Nicholas as a new character, Santa
Claus. These works of creative fiction may have produced
the
red-suited bearded jolly man that we see in every mall during
the holiday
season, but at its foundation is the man who lived a life
of faith and generosity - and isn't that the true spirit of
Christmas?
And so, a man who lived his life in the 4th century practicing
simple acts of kindness leaves a legacy of hope for us.
This Christmas
why not begin your own legacy by practicing random acts of kindness.
It doesn't have to be big. In a drive thru pay for the person's
order who is behind you. Donate food
to the food bank.
Be creative! Open yourself up to the exciting world of anonymous
gift
giving, and like St.
Nicholas, you will bring hope to people around you - and
maybe even farther than you can imagine.

"Santa Claus' reindeer
are a team of reindeer which pull his sleigh and help
him deliver Christmas gifts. According to Kris Kringle
(Miracle on 34th Street), they only fly on Christmas
Eve.
The names of the original
